The
Knit at Night Guild was formed in August 1996 by Denise
Winter and Jane Sheppard. The guild was designed to accommodate
knitters who work during the day and rapidly grew to 90+ members from
the Greater Houston area and beyond. Our membership now
numbers over 200. In addition to the main guild (KANG) which meets in
the Galleria area, we also have a chapter in Spring (Knitters North of
Town - KNOT) and another chapter forming in Katy. Our
mission is to promote education and communication, and to advance the
quality and workmanship in the members' knitting.
The guild includes both hand and
machine knitters; as well as crocheters, spinners, and weavers. Skill
levels range from beginner to intermediate to advanced knitters. Some
of our members have been trained and registered as knitting instructors
by the Craft Yarn Council, or have completed 1 or more levels of TKGA's
Master Knitting Program. The guild also began a lace special interest
group, The Lone Star Lace Knitters which holds it's own meetings.
Regular workshops, retreats, and
knit-ins provide an environment for members to learn and
advance their knitting skills. Past retreat instructors have been Carol
Anderson, Beth Brown-Reinsel, Nancy Bush, Lily Chin, Jackie
Erickson-Schweitzer, Kay Holt, Galina Khmeleva, Kathie Power
Johnson, Ginger Luters, Prudence Mapstone, Sally Melville, Lucy Neatby,
Cheryl Oberle, Judy Pascale, Merike Saarniit, Margaret Stove, Candace
Eisner Strick, Gloria Tracy, Nancie Wiseman.
