Friday April 8, 2016 (afternoon)

Class: Intro To Twined Knitting
Time: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm (3 hours)
Location: Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter
Member Price: $45 by check, $47 by Paypal

Description: Curious about the 400 year-old Swedish technique of Twined Knitting? In this three hour class, knit one of a pair of wristers while learning a traditional cast-on, twined knitting, twined purling, and patterning (the “O” stitch, the Crook stitch). Learn how to manage your yarns so that untwisting becomes a cinch! Reading Twined Knitting charts is also included. The typical gauge for traditional twined knitting is high, usually 8 stitches to the inch or more. I teach a lot of twined knitting classes and have found that students meet with better success and less frustration initially if they begin with a lower gauge.
Skill level: Intermediate. Must be comfortable with double pointed needles or working with two circulars.  Ability to knit English style (yarn held in the right hand) is very helpful, but not required.

Class: Cowichan Sweater
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (6 hours)
Location: Central Market, 3815 Westheimer
Member Price: $85 by check, $88 by Paypal

Description: On Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, the Coast Salish people developed this V-necked, shawl-collared garment after learning of knitting through Europeans who visited their area. The Salish prefer motifs that reflect the natural world (whales, birds, etc.) as well as geometric motifs. The cardigans, still handspun by some people, are knitted flat on double-pointed needles, with thick singles yarns in 2 or 3 colors. This class will cover working with up to three colors in a row (on the right side and wrong side), reading a chart, putting stripes in ribbing (without color distortion) a traditional shoulder join, creating a shawl collar shaped with short rows, knitting sleeves from the top down while shaping the cap, and working a button band while joining it to the garment. This sampler can be made in worsted weight or bulky yarn.
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced. Must be experienced at reading charts and using double pointed needles.

A choice of two- or three-color traditional motifs is incorporated in the main part of the glove as well as the gussetless thumb and a picot edge at the end.  Additional techniques to be discussed include knitting with two yarns in the right hand, two yarns in the left hand, or a yarn in each hand, as well as knitting with three colors and setting up the knitting for color changes in the braids.
Skill level: Intermediate. Must be proficient with double pointed needles.
