Charity News – July 2017

Our Charity Event on June 3 was a very fun, successful event! We kicked off our newest charity knitting opportunity – Knitted Knockers. The Rose will be the recipient of the Knockers we make. They are very excited to be receiving these for the clients they serve who have had mastectomies. If you would like to help make Knockers, visit the knittedknockers.org website to download a free pattern. There is a very specific yarn list which must be followed. When you turn in a completed Knocker, you must include a note with the name of the yarn you used. This is a KnittedKnockers.org requirement.

35 Knitted Knockers were delivered to The Rose. They were very grateful. If our charity knitters who work on them can send it that many in the next few months, we should be able to completely cover their needs. There will be a Baby Shower (Littlest Patriots Program) at the Veteran’s Hospital on July 14. Their next shower will be in October or November. Our charity knitters who knit for babies turn in some lovely items that are very much appreciated! We are supposed to get some pictures from this event.

By August, the Charity Knitting Opportunites page on the KANG website will be revised. Chapters always are free to decide what they want to do in regards to charity. The Opportunites page is provided to make members aware of some of the needs in the Houston area. There are certainly many other needs that are not listed. We are moving toward chapters assisting with distribution of items. If the distribution of a type of item is handled by another chapter, items will be exchanged at Executive Meetings.

These are the individuals who have volunteered to assist with this distribution so far:

Littlest Patriots — Lauren McConnell (KIK)
Children’s Safe Harbor — Cynthia Long (KNOW)
Red Scarves for Success — Susan Draper (KIK)
Montgomery Co. Women’s Center — Syvia Lockett (KNOT)
Star of Hope, Men’s Items — Ann Furlough (KIK)
Preemie Hats — Janet Wallace (KIK)
Head Start Hats — Susan Draper (KIK)
Teddies for Tragedies — Ann Furlough (KIK)
LBJ/Ben Taub Hospitals — Pam Lee (KNIT)
Knitted Knockers — Christiane Bernal(SoCK)

Charity donation volunteers are still needed for:

Star of Hope, Women & Children
HeartScarves

The distribution person does not have to be the charity person for your chapter.

If you knit for charity, please start working on items for cold weather. Please contact me at knitatnightguildcharity@gmail.com with any questions; or, if you or your chapter could take one of the two types of donations that need to be adopted.

As always, I encourage you to –

“Do what you can, with what you have, where your are”

A Thank You From Our Veterans

2016-littlest-patriots-certificateThe KIK Chapter was honored with a surprise visit on Saturday September 17 from VFW District 4 Commander Cecil McConnell. He presented KANG and KIK with certificates to thank us for all the hard work and donations to the Littlest Patriots program.

The Littlest Patriots program provides care packages for pregnant veterans or their wives or those that have had just had a baby. Knitted/crocheted baby hats, booties, and blankets have been generously donated by KANG members to go in these packages.

Mr. McConnell came in dress uniform to present us with the certificates and he shared with us an account of a baby shower that was held with a surprise there too! One of the expectant mothers went into labor at the shower!

It was wonderful to hear a first hand account of how helpful these gifts can be.

Mr. McConnell is the husband of one of our members, Lauren McConnell.

Land’s End KANG merchandise

You asked, and we listened. You can now order clothing and other items from Land’s End and have them embroidered with the official KANG logo. Just go to www.landsend.com/business and create your own account. Once you have an account, you can add the logo to your library within “account information”. The Customer Number is 6006634, and the Logo Number is 1281587.

The original logo is blue (like the KANG wallets), but you can change the color to coordinate with your shirt at no cost. The logo is about 2-1/2″ x 2-1/4″. It’s the same one we used when we ordered denim shirts a few years ago. Now everyone can order the style they like best, and get it shipped right to your door! Enjoy!
